Soooooooo... Intel just announced great profits because the netbook business has dropped. Manufacturers complain that there are no margins on netbooks. Apple just came out with a device that does a lot of what a netbook can do, and more and better .... so how's this netbook biz hurting them again?

It would be nice if people who make grandiose claims would revisit them and eat crow when due.

> netbook

The iPod touch is Apple's netbook. Once you think of it as that, all the rest makes sense. iPod touch even costs the same at retail, although its Total Cost of Ownership is much lower.

> MacBook Air

I carry a MacBook Air and iPhone 3GS 32GB with me everywhere. The combined weight is 1.4 kilos, the Total Cost of Ownership is $50 per month excluding carrier charges (which you wouldn't have with an iPod touch) so why do I need a netbook? If you gave me one, I would have no chance to use it. In any given situation, either the iPhone or the MacBook Air is a better choice. On the iPhone I thumb type about 40 wpm and on the MacBook Air I touch type about 80 wpm. What would I do with a netbook and hunt-and-peck? 20 maybe?

For $50 a month total I have 24/7 always-available trouble-free computing. People see my gear and think I also drive a Rolls Royce, but I'm happy to tell them it costs me $50 per month. One guy I know told me he pays his I-T consultant more than that to keep his 2 PC's free of viruses and malware and always updated to the latest patches.

The thing to notice with netbooks is they may be cheaper to buy than a notebook, but they require 100% of the same I-T support and administration. Anti-virus, anti-malware, backups, Windows upgrades to get the full OS. When you do the TCO on a netbook it is jaw-dropping. Instead of saving money by getting rid of viruses, commercial malware, and other PC issues, you saved money by getting rid of your CPU, GPU, and keyboard, but you keep the viruses and other PC issues. Totally wrong approach.

Boy, they sure missed an opportunity to erode their brand and cut into their profits by putting a bunch of substandard products into an already crowded market.

Why do people keep thinking market share for its own sake is a good thing?

What say you now, Charles, after Apple sold 2.3M laptops and made over a $1B on them??? Lack of a Netbook still a bad strategy for Apple?

Here's a tip: don't bet against Steve Jobs :-)
