Remote work requires more self-leadership skills (people/soft skills) along with external reinforcement leadership skills by the project or team leader.

What makes remote or on site teams both efficient and effective is the shared used of a proven goal setting/goal achievement process along with the use of the same tool.

This keeps the communication focused on the results and allows the team to collectively work out the challenges.

This definitely provides challenges - but as you've pointed out, not insurmountable. I, for one, do well with pure socialmedia (be it email, Twitter, Facebook, IM, SMS, etc) - but I am not prone to pick up the phone and talk. That is a weak area for me, and one I recognize.

What I try to do, is schedule weekly (if possible) staff meetings. The staff meetings are more about building teamwork, continuity, and community - not so much as actual decision making or information sharing. So, for this goal, a more social venue helps (eg; lunch, etc).
