Android This Week: More Tasty Updates Coming; Android Gets a Voice

Google has dessert on the brain. After naming the current version of Android Cupcake, the company this week admitted it’s naming all the Android updates after dessert items, and in alphabetical order. Next up will be Donut, followed by Eclair and Flan. Far more significant, however, was the revelation that these updates will come this year, an indication of just how serious Google is about the platform’s evolution.

An Android version of Google Voice was made available this week as well, and we found it made using Voice feel as if it was native to the Android platform. That is the mark of a well-designed app and Google gets kudos from us for it — at the same time, it’s likely making phone carriers very nervous.

A rumor has surfaced at Android Central that Google will be releasing the next major version of Android as early as this summer, even though we expected a few more minor updates to come first. A rep from the Weather Channel told Android Guys in an interview that it was testing a version of its app to work with Android 2.0. Could Donut be version 2.0?
