NBC Universal is nearly guaranteed to bring home a pile of online-video related Emmy Awards this year. It simply dominates the nominations, which were announced today. Meantime, the one and only independent web production to be honored with a nomination is Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible.
Here are the NewTeeVee-relevant nominees:
Dr. Horrible is up in the “Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs” category, against 30 Rock’s Kenneth the Web Page on NBC.com, Battlestar Galactica: The Face Of The Enemy from SyFy, The Daily Show Correspondents On Jon Stewart from Comedy Central, as well as the Super Bowl half-time show. Jay Leno’s Garage is up for best short-format non-fiction program, against only one other nominee, Writer’s Draft from Fox Movie Channel, which I haven’t been able to find more information about online.
As for the broadband-specific category “Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media,” The 30 Rock Digital Experience on NBC.com, The Dharma Initiative on ABC.com and The Office Digital Experience on NBC.com took the three fiction nominations, while Bravo Digital Media: Top Chef at BRAVO.com, The Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Digital Experience at NBC.com, and The Saturday Night Live Digital Experience at NBC.com received the non-fiction nominations. Good on ya, ABC.com, for sneaking past all those peacock programs.
Some viral video all-star clips are also worth a shout-out. Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin impression on SNL got her a bid for “Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series.” Those Feylin clips were seen far more times online than when they original aired on TV. Justin Timberlake’s fun-filled Saturday Night Live hosting skits got multiple shout-outs, including “Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics” for the Digital Short Motherlover, the follow-up to the Emmy-winning Dick in a Box.
And tangentially related to online video because it’s for an online video site — in the outstanding commercial category, Alec In Huluwood for Hulu (which, yes, NBC part-owns) by Crispin Porter + Bogusky is a nominee.
