Somehow I get the feeling that many of the complaints about Apple’s secrecy have more to do with various interested parties (reporters, bloggers, investment “gurus”) feeling entitled to inside info that they can then peddle and spin for their own benefit than with actual concerns about corporate governance or fiduciary duty. As Mr. Jade points out at the end of the article: then, Apple at about $85; now, Apple at around $135. I don’t see Apple being a bad actor here. (Disclaimer: this comment was typed on a MacBook!)

I hate these “stories” where the credible source is an anonymous employee rambling about this and that. Give me a name, and pictures and then i will start believing.

While the over-the-top description of internal security could be questioned, Apple’s obsession with secrecy isn’t really debatable. My own anecdote comes from reporting at Macworld 2005. After ThinkSecret broke the Mac mini story in December, walking into Moscone Center in January was like something out of an episode of Chuck. They had put up black curtains everywhere, sealed off as much of the building as they could, set up walkways and turnstiles. Honestly, I’m surprised media weren’t blindfolded.

Apple is probably the most secretive purveyor of personal technology in the world, and it’s worked well for them.
