You know if you compare the required IP video network bandwidth for MJPEG and H.264 you can be surprised. I made check it  myself using bandwidth calculations of IP Video System Design Tool from http://www.jvsg.com.

I got the MPEG4 can take be 4 times less bandwidth than MJPEG and H.264 can take up to 3 times less than MPEG4.

So for sure Video streams are going to take quite a bandwidth, but if people are going to use H.264 compression for their video streams it can ease the problem a little.

Rather than continuous video upload - which is seriously bandwidth and CPU intensive (particularly on the server side when you have tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of cameras sending in continuous data) AND suffers from the &quot;unwatchability problem&quot; (who&#039;s going to wade through hours of video feeds to see IF something occurred?) - I think the way to go is &quot;event based video recording&quot;, so video is sent out only on a scheduled basis or when motion is detected. This makes it far easier to process all that incoming data, makes economical (even free) services possible, and makes it easier for the end-user to review the recorded material.
