I think that while interesting, O3D won't gain a lot of traction beyond Chrome, and Chrome is still a very small slice of the pie. The one interesting ace in the hole is Google Wave, which if it catches on and is fully compatible with 03D, the combination could produce some interesting hybrid apps, that involve 3D spaces, messaging, avatars and social networking. But for this to take place, Google Wave has to be a hit product with mass adoption.

As for virtual worlds using 03D, I think it's going to be hard for Google to compete with dedicated providers, like Unity and Instant Action. Probably the best uses of 03D will come from websites and social networks that want to add fun 3D environments or content to an otherwise non-virtual world service. This could be interesting.

That said, I've been wrong before, so maybe Google has some trick up its sleeve to gain mass adoption, like a deal with Firefox for 03D. That could turn the tables.

Hmm. I hope that Google has learned their lesson, "crippled" virtual worlds will not work :)

Jon's right. This solutio by Google is a good VRML/X3D replacement, in the sense that it provides a new set of protocols to replace X3D, but also gives us a nice embeddable plugin. But... ultimately, what you can do with it now, when it's released?

Granted, I suppose that Google really wishes us to think about the possibilities of what they might release in the future. Again, it should be Raph Koster worrying :)

You understand that o3d is just a 3D scene graph API, right?
And a virtual world needs communication, voice chat, application sharing, avatars, animations, physics, and a bunch of other things, right?
While you can program o3d in JavaScript, don't expect that to be able to keep up with the native 3D engines like Unity, Instant Action or similar.
o3d will be relevant if it gets the same level of adoption as Flash -- if an advertiser can build o3d content without worrying about losing viewers, then they'll get somewhere.
