Microsoft Mobile vs. Android: Hostilities to Start Afresh May 11th

Mary Jo Foley, a veteran technology reporter, says that Microsoft will release Windows Mobile version 6.5 on May 11 at the Redmond giant’s TechEd 2009 conference in Los Angeles. Though not a complete overhaul (that comes with Windows Mobile 7.0), it is a vital upgrade that Microsoft needs to make in order to stay competitive in the smartphone OS business. In my opinion, Windows Mobile is the most likely victim of Google’s Android. Interestingly, in Google’s first-quarter call, CEO Eric Schmidt said, “Overall, it looks like Android is going to have a very strong year.” Microsoft’s Windows Mobile partners — Motorola, Samsung and HTC — are all spending considerable resources on Android-based phones.
