There's going to be some pain in the management space. You have the new breed of cloud management systems (Rightscale, Elastra, Scalr, etc), the virtualization vendors(VMware), Microsoft, and the old guard of systems management (Tivoli, BMC, etc) all competing to manage hybrid cloud environments. Plus, I think we'll see others develop bridge or glueware that allows management systems of one type to play nicely in their non-native realm (e.g. making Tivoli cloud-aware or making Rightscale more enterprise IT aware).

"Cloud", or the 15 year trend known as outsourced services, will continue to include converged LAN/WAN/Mobile networks. This is indeed the next battleground for the big tech firms. Cloud services allow companies to focus on their core competence and product portfolio, leaving IT LAN/WAN/Mobile to IBM, NSN, ALU, Ericsson, Huawei, etc.

"Boxes" have become commodity, IT talents are scarce but services have margin. I predict more consolidation and would not be surprised if Cisco enters the services space by 2010 to get their share of a $100-$150 services market for converged managed services in the LAN and WAN + mobile (recent Business Week article refers to Cisco as having a stretch goal of becoming an IT powerhouse).

gp, a dedicated server can have a hard drive, NIC card failure which is un-likely ( though possible) with a cloud. Dedicated servers, co-located equipment leased with the heft of a larger balance sheet can sure beat the cost of an outsourced cloud solution if an organization's IT team is 'cloud ready'. But do look at Amazon's plans for enterprises as opposed to their normal pricing before you compare the numbers.

Being start-up we tried amazon ec2 but it turns a dedicated server comes at same cost as ec2 instance on monthly basis and its easier to manage ...its dedicated server is sometimes a bit cheaper and easier manage .........so only cost saving /advantage I see time based computing .........suppose maxium hits to site come at particular time say 10 am to 2 pm/or weekends / holiday ...so can make new instances servers and delete it when load is low .........if hits are fairly static (global website ) or unpredictable then ddicated servers are the best
