attacking zombieIf you’re an irritated Time Warner Cable customer in Los Angeles who has been experiencing crappy service for the last week, you can blame the zombies. Time Warner emailed to let us know that it has determined that a denial of service attack against its DNS servers was at fault. From its statement:

However, this particular series of attacks has been larger and more difficult to contain than similar attacks in the past. We suspect that the attackers are using “zombie computers,” or hijacking unsuspecting subscribers’ machines to perpetuate the attack without its owner’s knowledge.

To help solve the problem, Time Warner suggests area customers refresh their antivirus and firewall software rather than stock up on vinyl LPs or other zombie-killing paraphernalia.

  2. Time Warner Executives are subverting visa laws by allowing foreign operatives to displace American workers using WebX. WebX allows foreign operatives work from another nation and replace most any job in their organization without conforming to Visa laws. Thus Executives and the CEO is able to enrich themselves while putting another American Family on the street. They are quite calculated in their search for profits and know no mercy or social responsibility.

I support the hacker attack on the Time Warner Executives because of their unscrupulous and unconventional war tactics that they wage on American employees.

I hope the attacks intensify because it is the only way to help American families feed their children. We need the jobs here on American soil. When the Executives stop waging unconventional warfare on their employees I expect the attacks to diminish.

If TW CEO’s and Executives continue to wage unconventional warfare against their employees then I will cancel my service.

  3. Most articles I’m reading on this are giving the impression this is limited to southern California, I’m in Missouri and have been feeling the effects for the same period, tonight it’s the worst. (I’m glad it could happen when KZ2 is released for PS3, no wonder I have time to post about this.)

I found someone posting a reply talking about Time Warner’s shipping american jobs over seas as being the reason for the attacks. I would like to voice the following everywhere I can in response to that person:

Everywhere we are hearing about unemployment numbers here in the USA reaching 8%, and with the government extending entitlements to those out of work. I would like everyone to follow the train of thought here:

“I have lost my job. I have technical abilities to launch a massive attack like this. I am going to use my abilities to launch such an attack instead of using my resources to get another job.”

Whoever launched this attack does have extensive technical abilities, and it’s no wonder the economy is in such terrible shape if that is the response our capable workers have whenever they lose their jobs.

This person has the ability to make an enormous revenue stream of their own, but chose to make life miserable for people using the service. This does not hurt the company — they still collect for services rendered despite the attacks — it hurts the AMERICAN PEOPLE using the service, the same AMERICAN PEOPLE they are “fighting for.”

I am now off the soap box, but consider the train of thought, with their entitlements increasing to where they can still afford internet service to launch their attacks, why should they get a job? Think of the intelligence that is at work here destroying something instead of creating a product others want to buy in a recession… hmm…

I would like to add that the person going around posting this garbage complaint is being seen in many articles, named “WARBMAN”, I would think the authorities should look in that persons direction, since they are making it such a duty to tell EVERYONE about the cause. Imagine that, he has posted here!

  5. Time Warner SoCal had an issue, but the same DNS servers are used for another division which has customers in many states in smaller markets, Jason. I do tech support there, and have been dealing with it with customers. Usually swapping to OpenDNS or a an open DNS server such as 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, etc has been helping a lot. Tech support should be able to tell people if their speed issues are related to the DNS problems or not. A group of markets spread across the national were impacted, mostly smaller cities and towns not linked to a large municipal area.

People who were having DNS issues would get good results on speed-tests, but would still have issues reaching pages slowly, so Kamas912 may have a different issue. Speed problems are never fun.

That said, it should be largely resolved, by a combination of network security and throwing more system resources into the DNS service.

    @ Warbman:
Funny, my job is still here. WebX is subverting visa laws? You need to take the foil hat off, it’s cooking your brain a bit there. Its the exact same as claiming that companies are subverting laws by having phone lines redirect to overseas call centers through VoIP – which is nearly every customer service outsourcing company.

And remember, if your modem or cable box overheats – it may be due to the tinfoil you put on to shield it. Layoffs in the cable industry are far, far lower than most others and if you want to push your ire around, put it someplace that is actually outsourcing entirely overseas.

  6. I lost my service last week; though, it’s my own fault for being a timewarner customer in the first place.

I can’t wait to switch to ATT next week!

Seriously, every time I change the channel on my timewarner DVR – I die a little bit inside.

  7. This is unbelievable. Our Internet service is being brought to its knees because of a poorly designed computer platform that is full of holes which let in any form of spyware, adware, viruses and trojans!

Our nation’s energy supply and no doubt other strategic computer operated systems are threatened by a crappy non-Unix standard operating system. Why, because it’s easy to operate, it’s cheap and it is the standard.

Very stupid idea folks. A very unfortunate circumstance – what is going to be done?

  8. I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL CUSTOMER FOR OVER 16 YEARS. THIS PAST YEAR HAS BEEN WAY WORSE THAN THEIR USUAL LOUSY SERVICE. I
HAVE WHAT THEY CALL “TILING” EVERY DAY, WHICH HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR A YEAR OR SO. WE PAY 195.00 PER MONTH FOR SERVICE THAT IS COMPLETELY SUBSTANDARD. LATELY THE PICTURE SCREENS HAVE ALSO BEEN “FREEZING”, THEN YOU HAVE A BLACK SCREEN FOR ANYWHERE UP TO SEVERAL HOURS, DISTUSTING. I’M DONE WITH TIME WARNER AND THEIR EXPENSIVE HORRIBLE SERVICE.
