Canadian gov. is selling off everything; that is shameless!

How is it possible for a government to fail so miserably the Canadian people?
$30M is an insult!
I can’t comprehend this.

4.5B dollars are nothing for the Canadian Government.
We are missing a chance again and again to promote the Canadian talent.
One time Canada was the best in the world in telecommunication field.
US was way behind us and now we are going to pack and go with nothing.

I am so disgusted and angry …..

It is an infusion of capital that is being funded by a bond facility. That means that the Canadian citizens may make some interest if Nortel emerges from bankruptcy. If they don’t emerge and eventually go under then this is effectively a bailout.

It’s a C$30M loan that the Canadian Government has offered through the EDC. The EDC spokesperson said clearly this is a loan not a bailout. How long do you think $30M would last at Nortel!!

I’d also point out that Nortel didn’t invent the technology of the “digitizing of phone calls”; that came with the T1 carrier system that was invented by Bell Labs. They also didn’t invent digital *switching* of phone calls; the AT&T 4ESS switch was introduced in the mid-70s. They did develop the first digital *local* switching office (the DMS family), launched in the early 80s.

if ottawa had a functioning venture capital sector _and_ embraced failure like silicon valley does, i’d agree w/ you on layoffs leading to greater incentive to figure out something entrepreneurial…. in absence of a healthy venture capital ecosystem, nortel-nanny may be a necessity.
