I just tried it out but does not seem like a revolution, only a good platform for viewing copyright-legal video material (we're not 100% interested in this).
I will explore better.

I've tried using Boxee. It's nice, but I couldn't understand how they deal with podcasts, especially Torrent RSS. It seems like they are having you notify them of this new content, then they stream it to you, which seems completely backward. Makes me think they want to become another gatekeeper, while Miro's whole point is to build an environment without them.

And isn't Transmission just a bittorrent client? There are tons of those out there, but I'll hold onto Miro for that function at least.

Janko, do you agree that Miro is pointing to the future we all want, creators and consumers, if we could just figure out a decent way to support the creators? It is pretty damn easy to put up a website, be seen by the world, and stay completely independent. From what I gather, the folks at Miro want to reinvent TV along the same lines. That's inspiring, and worthy of all the support we can give IMHO.

And anyway, the 10-foot UI doesn't seem like it would be that difficult. I'd love to hear from the Miro team about this issue directly.

I don't think there will be a set-top box or 10 foot UI version of Miro anytime soon. They've told me that their "core focus" is on the PC-based client.

William, did you ever try to use a combination of Boxee & Transmission?

Miro is great! I am constantly running it on my mac mini hooked up to my HDTV. But my main reason is to provide bandwidth for torrents (which brings down distribution costs substantially) for shows distributed via torrent rss, like Democracy Now! I would love to use it more often to actually watch the programming, but it doesn't have a 10-ft UI (like Front Row) yet. I'd love to see them team up with a set-top hardware maker(s). There are a million reasons to love Miro, especially if you'd like to see a more open media future. The gatekeeper-free nature of the net combined with the capacity for cultural resonance that video has in our lives. That's what Internet TV should be.

Interesting that Miro 2.0 and Boxee Alpha for windows are release around the same time. Who will win the battle for that critical connection to the big screen?
