I'm having the exact same problem. I live in Iceland and the apple store here tell's me there's nothing they can do.

I won't be buying another super expensive laptop that doesn't even last 2 years.

I’m not the lucky one to be told that it was my nVidia! They’re all saying it’s the logic board and I must pay $$$. I wrote about my experience and points out arguments from both my own experience and others in my blog.

I feel that the different treatment Apple give for each of every customers (some got replacement, some are not) are unfair to us, their loyal consumer. We all got the defective product and we paid a lot for that.

So check my new blog http://appleblackscreen.wordpress.com

Give your story and comment there. I say we the customers of Apple must let Apple know how disappointed we are with their service.

Extactly the same problem here..my MBP is in the research/repair state. I took it to an apple premium reseller, they said to me it could be the nvidia problem. Let's wait and see. For as far as I know i have only the video-processor problem and no hd-problems.

Let's wait and see...i hope i get a free repair like more people on this site!

Mine has failes too yesterday.
Apple's article says that they pay for logic board replacement within 3 years since purchase, I cannot show any evidence of purchase but with serial number they can see my MBP was built no prior to may 2007, and we are in april 2010 so..
but what happens next? will I experience the same problem with the new logic board or it is solved forever with the replacement?
In case it will fail again, apple won't pay for a second replacement is that right?

Yup, mine too. My screen would blank out on me regularly, and I thought I was doing something wrong, like my cursor was in the sleep corner too far out for me to retrieve. It often came back in 5-10 minutes but after 2 years of use, on March 15, 2010, it blanked out completely. I Targeted the HD to another older computer whose Optical Drive also stopped working. I sent it out via FedEx on Saturday and got it back on Wednesday. They replaced the Logic Board, Top Case, Keyboard and Optical SuperDrive. The drive would only read some dvds, not all. I never knew my Trackpad (Top Case replacement) was supposed to feel/work differently. I have Apple Care extended warranty, bought this computer in fall of 2008. I have 300 more days of Apple Care, there's a 3 year max apparently.

Hello to all!

Guys, i just got back my MBP. A very professional company made a test. They recognized the problem as Nvidia, and they fixed. I have documented everything. I have photos, and official, professional reports. And finally, which is the most important, a 100% working Macbook Pro, like proof as well. Hey Apple, do you want to see this documents? Because some journalist here, they are... indeed...

Update#2: I ended up having to replace the logic board a second time. The board started to heat up very rapidly after it was replaced, and that probably impacted battery life...The service center replaced the board second time, which is good..However, am clearly disappointed with the whole thing now...Battery is down to <45 mins, superdrive refuses to function......And I don't have any more patience to run behind Apple and their service centers...Like others have said, spending close to $2000, and seeing the machine give away in 2-odd years is extremely disappointing and will surely have bearing in my next Mac/PC purchase!
