Stanza_2We’ve never hidden the fact that our favorite ebook reader is eReader.  We’ve used it for years on just about every platform and currently both Kevin and I are big fans of eReader on the iPhone.  Another reader from Lexcycle, Stanza, has been one of the most downloaded apps for the iPhone since its release.  Stanza is a great reader application but Kevin and I lamented the fact that it could not handle content purchased in the eReader store.

Today’s breaking news will make fans of Stanza and eReader very happy indeed.  Fictionwise, the company behind the eReader format, is announcing a licensing deal with Lexcycle to provide access to the eReader format to Stanza on the iPhone.  The Stanza folks are also launching their own Stanza eReader store providing total access to the 40,000+ eReader library within Stanza.  The version of Stanza that was released in the past few days will already handle eReader content but it had not been announced until this news broke.  You can read your eReader content with Stanza right now if you try it.

The folks at Fictionwise will continue to provide the eReader iPhone app so this deal broadens the options for users who have eReader content.  It’s all about choice, you can continue to use the eReader app or Stanza, whatever floats your boat.  Fictionwise just wants their content everywhere and this is only the first move in that direction.  They intend to make other licensing deals in the future.

Full press release after the jump.

Chatham, NJ – December [TBD], 2009 – Fictionwise, Inc., the largest independent eBook retailer in North America, and Lexcycle, Inc., the creators of the award-winning electronic book reader Stanza, today announced that over 40,000 eBooks from Fictionwise.com are now available for purchase and download via Stanza, the most popular eBook application for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

In an agreement between the two companies, Lexcycle has licensed Fictionwise’s eReader eBook reading format for integration with the Stanza iPhone application. In addition, Fictionwise will operate the “Stanza by Fictionwise” eBook store, which is accessible directly through the Stanza app, and gives Stanza users access to over 40,000 titles from all major trade publishers.

“We are very excited that our large and growing catalog of electronic books is now available to Stanza users,” said Steve Pendergrast, co-founder of Fictionwise, Inc. “eReader continues to be the only eBook distribution format on the iPhone and iPod touch that is widely accepted by virtually all major publishers. Our goal is to make the eReader format available everywhere.”

The integration of the “Stanza by Fictionwise” eBook store with the Stanza app enables customers to browse and search for eBooks based on title, author, genre, or popularity. Customers can then purchase and wirelessly download eBooks right on their iPhone or iPod touch for immediate reading.

“Just in time for the holidays, Stanza readers are going to be able to find their favorite authors like Stephen King, Mary Higgins Clark, James Patterson, and Nora Roberts,” said Neelan Choksi, COO of Lexcycle.  “This relationship with Fictionwise is a big step forward in our ongoing effort to expand the selection of works available to our large and growing user base.”

Availability
Stanza for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch is available today as a free download from the iTunes App Store or from Lexcycle.com. Users can immediately browse and purchase electronic books for Stanza from Fictionwise by visiting the “Stanza by Fictionwise” eBook Store in Stanza’s built-in Online Catalog.

  1. Am I missing something? The login for Stanza by Fictionwise is different from the login for ereader.com. I don’t see any way to access my ereader bookshelf. What am I doing wrong?

  2. Please wait until the official press release in an hour to be able to access everything. You’ll need to use the eReader store in Stanza to get at stuff, I believe. We’re ahead of the curve on this news.

  3. Maybe so. There is a Stanza by Fictionwise bookstore accessible from Stanza on the iPhone but it goes to the Fictionwise website, not the ereader website. My ereader login doesn’t work on this site and when I created a new Fictionwise login it doesn’t access my ereader content. I’m suspecting that Fictionwise made a deal with Stanza to sell books and that Stanza can read them, but I don’t see the connection with my already purchased books from ereader.com. I hope that will be the case.

  4. The logins for stanza.fictionwise.com (which Stanza uses) and http://www.fictionwise.com/www.ereader.com (the main Fictionwise storefront) use different account information. You can still access your eReader bookshelf by adding mobile.ereader.com as a “Web Catalog”.

  5. From the Stanza website:

How can I get my books in the Fictionwise eReader format from my desktop to my iPhone?

Since Stanza Desktop does not yet support opening books in the eReader format, you will need to find an alternative solution for transferring your books from your desktop to Stanza on your iPhone or iPod Touch. One such solution is to upload your book to the “Personal Content” section of your bookshelf at stanza.fictionwise.com.

  6. Marc had it right. Select online catalog. Hit the + at the bottom right of the screen. Hit “Add Web Page”. Enter “mobile.ereader.com” as the URL. I was able to log in, go to my online bookshelf, and download a book from my bookshelf to Stanza. It prompted me to enter the code to unlock the book, and then BAM! I was reading. Thanks for the tip.

  7. This is such awesome news! I love eReader books, but Stanza is such an awesome app. Kudos to both companies for realizing and capitalizing on the opportunity to work together.

  8. I use stanza all the time, great application! I have never used ereader. but stanza is missing some crucial features from other book readers namely page numbering, search, and definition lookups. does ereader or any other iphone book reader have these features?
