I lived through such a time - at the beginning of the 80's and it wasn't on the internet, but everything that you say is key to surviving. I remember that it was hard for me to find a good adviser but when I finally did - and he was someone with legal authority to help us work with our suppliers so they didn't throw us into bankruptcy, it was exactly what we needed.

Our other major concern was that our employees never lost out - and I am pleased to say that we succeeded in our goal. Our company survived and so did everyone who worked for us.

The experience was a long time ago now, but in my mind, it is one of my biggest achievements. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger is often used loosely and in this case - I can say that yes, indeed, it did!

I have only one request. We all know why this happened by this time. So forget about bailing out the money monsters and associated greedy spinsters in the form of various motors company and other banks.

We should request the Govt. to do these:

Ask a federal enquiry into it. No holds barred. Whoever it is does not matter - congressman, high powered individuals, CEOs, board of directors, VCs with vulgar amount of money.
Whoever is proven guilty, put them into a life sentence. Period. Whoever is party to the crime by abetting it - take away their licenses and never ever they should be allowed to do business.
Do not bail out anyone. Be it Citi or GM or Lehman. They have made those greedy decisions, let them fall. In fact we do not need these kind of companies at all no values, no ethics, no moral. Let them learn the lesson. People who have some morals would have defintely opposed it and they are welcome in the next phase of business.
Recession has come time and again past World War 2 due to pure greediness. This kind of people are cancers in any society and let us get rid of them. Good God, we are not even in an war, and these people have created so much mayhem across the globe.

Well, easier said than done. But one thing for sure, it is time that we must start to look at these people with full suspicion. Easy money, easy loan was, is or will never ever be a solution. Let us realize it and ask the govt. to change the fundamentals.

IN these troubled times, I've also been thinking about the recent crop of web companies. We're in this financial mess because capital and resources were diverted to an unsustainable, and overall unproductive part of the economy (financial engineering). So now, productive parts of the economy are struggling because they can't get financing, since most of it has been squandered away by the unproductive parts.

So I'm gonna be a jerk, and say, OVERALL, all these web layoffs are healthy for the nation, and economy. The market is readjusting, and web companies with no business plan, and sustained by hype, must go. If the nation is to remain competitive, its industries must be built on solid foundations, and not on hype or speculation. Economies, and the wealth of a nation should never depend on exit strategies. Build me a better goddamn mouse trap yall.
