&lt;p&gt;what the industry needs is active Power-Control-Protocol (over IP - PCP/IP for short) that can power up only the active parts of all networking equipment and turn off power to unused ports/blades OR re-assign connections to fewer active line-cards to save power.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;that, imho, is what needs to be done across vendors..... anyone ?&lt;/p&gt;
