Great post Stacey. I'm disappointed but not surprised to see early stage take a (yet another) hit. Certainly it is a difficult time all around, but whether you invest now depends on your time horizon and confidence in your ability to time a market. History shows the latter to be quite deadly, and the former (ie time horizon) for early stage is anything but where the market is today. Because we are purely early stage investors, we have a 5-7 year outlook. Real companies take time to build. True (which full discl seed funded GigaOm) continues to invest aggressively in our core business, which is seed rounds of < $500K and A rounds of $1-2mm. Capital efficiency, lack of fundamental innovation by the big companies, and the fact that competition and noise both decrease in a downturn, has us extremely excited about the current environment.

It will get tougher, but starting a company has always been tough, and the best and brightest consistently choose to leave behind safety and security for challenge, personal reward, and the fulfillment and satisfaction that comes from creating something real from an idea.

Startups and innovation are happening now, and we will look back on this difficult time as one which gave rise to some great companies.

the last paragraph paints a good picture of things to come for VC's. The VC model is broken..and many VC's will agree to this.

Nice to read that CMEA is creating a program for smaller investments. That is unless its only lip service from them.
