There are lots of much simpler ideas that people can implement to save their own time and money with a quick payback. Things like composting, CFC light bulbs, etc. Energy shortages are caused by small actions by everybody, and energy savings will come the same way.

To be sure, Google has done a tremendous amount of work in making sure that their data centres use power efficiently, and a lot of ISPs could learn from them.
