Brand Thunder is doing this for brand marketers. We're customizing Firefox with a single install for both themes and extensions, creating a branded experience for fans of sports teams, bands, news sites and more. (Samples can be seen at http://brandthunder.com/gallery)

So far, brands are liking it and user adoption is strong.

Given that the browser is becoming more OS like, plugins behave more or less like an app-install. So it's not really much of a radical departure

We started our business with a plug-in (http://tynted.com/0LWdOTua33w) but have since evolved into what I would call a 'hybrid'. You can use Tynt without the plug-in, and at this point, 20% of the people who use our service use the plug-in, and the rest use our gateweay.

Smart story, Om. I'm still very skeptical that a plug-in company can be a standalone business. Covered one today, for example, that leaves me scratching my head: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10053211-2.html.

But then there's StumbleUpon, which did make the add-on business work.

Om:

I have been using Cooliris for the past 6 months now, and I absolutely LOVE this product. I find myself using it more and more. I wish they would allow me to surf HTML pages in this interface too, then I would spend all my time in this interface.

Irene

BTW, I really like the Ads in their interface. They are the best Ads on the web.

I believe that browsers still lacks the tight integration requied to create a powerful applcation. Right now the most you can do to get some info, launch some application or at most stumple. We have some way to before we see browser as the centralized application of your desktop and that tiem it will give us a lot of integration opportunity.

We in the IE and Chrome browser world rely on Ad Muncher from Australia, which does a fine job in my browsers for years, and has great support. The perfect platform-independent plugin still missing is a bookmark manager supporting all browsers, incl. Opera. And of course ad-block for mobile.
