Sprint (NYSE: S) is getting one step closer to mobile payments with a massive roll-out of a service currently live 6,600 New York City cabs. The system, developed in partnership with VeriFone’s transportation system, will allow cab-goers to use a 10.4 inch touch screen to review the fare, make a payment and also view content, such as location-based information, weather updates and news reports. Of course, this isn’t totally a mobile payment since users won’t be using their phone, but instead a screen that’s connected to Sprint’s data network, but you can see how it’s headed in that direction. Programming on the screen will include content from WABC-TV’s local news, AccuWeather, Reuters Business News, People.com, Disney (NYSE: DIS) Broadway and Zagat Survey. Philadelphia, Chicago and Las Vegas are next. Release.
