Another good tip from Robert found its way to my inbox: I’m sure there’s Eee PC owner or two out there that will appreciate it. There’s a new and "eeemproved" Ubuntu distro that’s customized for the Eee called eeebuntu. You can go with the snazzy Compiz Fusion enabled gnome version or go plain-vanilla with the Ubuntu Netbook Remix packages. Performance looks pretty darn good on the original 701 4G model Eee PC too: just check it in the above vid and supply your own audio track. I made mine funny, but feel free to make serious commentary when you watch.

Some of what’s included in this distro:

  • Working WiFi… always a must
  • A simple and effective program launcher (shown below)
  • OpenOffice Suite 2.4
  • Pidgin, Skype and aMSN
  • Amorak, Gtkpod and VLC for media
  • Firefox 3.0.1 for everything else. OK, I’m biased there but that’s because I’m boycotting client apps for a while.

You can grab the distro at the eeebuntu project page to give it a go. Hey, what do you have to lose when you can effectively restore your Eee to Xandros in about 90 seconds?

  1. Heard the news.
    Congrats!!

  2. You have more to lose than 90 seconds, if you choose to install that is. You will lose your default restore partition and will be forced to restore from the included DVD. Not a huge deal, but will take longer than 1.5 mins.

  3. The web site says: ‘We need your feedback to help us get eeebuntu into a useful and usable state.’

That suggests to me that it’s not there yet.

I get on pretty well with the Xandros Advanced desktop. However, the erratic wi-fi connection on my 701 is driving me crazy.

  4. Anybody tried this eee version on another device? (samsung q1u,..)?

  5. Heard the news, and DID IT. It worked on my 701, and I am very pleased. After reboot, it picked up wifi signals, and logins were no problem. This is a very good thing, as original Xandros software had stopped working at some public places, like a neighborhood coffee shop. The shop had upgraded encryptation protocols, and I was locked out. I will be interested to hear if other readers have tried eeePC/Ubuntu on other machines. Cheers.

  7. This looks really interesting. I can’t wait to download and install on my 900.

Question…Has anyone heard of problems with the eeebuntu site? I went to download and install, and couldn’t get their website to load. Are there any mirrors or torrents of the new version available?
