Nice post, Larry. Good tips that remind us all, entrepreneur or not, that resting on one's laurels is never advisable if you want continued success.

Larry - Solid post. As a very early stage entrepreneur these are great thing to remember to avoid.
"A smart man learns from his mistakes, but a genius learns from other mistakes."
I'd prefer to be the latter, so thanks for the help. Talk to you soon.

Nice article to help pre-startups remember the importance of maintaining some humility. Thanks.

Goodness this was really well edited... thx Carleen. My original version was much *rougher*

@workpost Foreman: Good point. I was writing with the focus on pre-entrepreneurs and helping them embrace their situation for them to get their first hit VS writing to laugh at One-Hits

@penguin pete. you should write a post on the "pre Hit Wonder" :-) Its like celebrating before the touchdown.

Yet, isn't getting one hit still better than getting no hits at all?

Hoo-boy, did you hit the nail on the head!

Working as a freelance writer/coder/artist online, I dread what I've come to call "VC-shock". When I start out on a contract with a startup, they're very engaged and focused.

Then a big investment lands in their lap. Suddenly the company's too busy shopping for those catamarans to pay any attention to business. Deadlines blow by as I'm helpless to complete projects without specs, work gets finished and sits unused, and even though the owners are swimming in money, you have to nag them to send the check. It takes weeks to get any reply back about anything, and the responses become, "yeah, whatever you want to do".

They get so blissed-out, it's like dealing with somebody who's high. You have to snap your fingers and go, "Pay attention! The company still has to make money!"
