Iphone_shot_2I started using TripIt back in December and although I don’t travel much (do coffee runs count?), I like the value this free service provides. TripIt organizes your travel plans in one place, so you don’t have to dig through mounds of paper to find the street location of that hotel room you reserved or wonder what the last digit of that flight number is. Today the company announced a mobile-friendly site for iPhones, Palm Treos, RIM BlackBerry devices and any other mobile device with a browser. The older TripIt to Me service that sends text messages with your travel plans is still up and running, but having everything in one web page is a great second option. You can also see if other TripIt users are close-by, which always good for a paging prank if you happen to be in same airport. I have to pick my father up from Philadelphia International Airport later today, so I’ve already got his flight plans in my TripIt account. Since the mobile website offers Alerts for delays, I’ll know if have time for a Starbucks run on the way to the airport. Hit up http://m.tripit.com on your handlheld once you’re hooked up with a free TripIt account. Upon first inspection, I may not need the TripIt synchronization with Google Calendar that I was using.

  1. I love Tripit!! For keeping up with and communicating your itinerary to others it cannot be beat. If you travel at all you should give it a try.

I tried Tripit after reading about it on Joel Spolsky’s blog. I forwarded it a couple of emails relating to the same trip: one containing details of a return flight from Toulouse to London and the other with my hotel reservation. It choked on both. At first, I wondered if it was a US-only service but of course it can’t be, if it deals with international travel.

Then I wondered if it failed to interpret the emails because they were in French; I’d still expect it to be able to extract times, dates and airport names, though.

I’ll probably try it again, if I can remember my user details.
