Windowsmobile61Not that this wasn’t expected, but Microsoft officially outed Windows Mobile 6.1 today in conjunction with CTIA. Here’s the initial listing of what devices will be getting the upgrade treatment:

  • Alltel’s PPC6800 and HTC Touch
  • AT&T’s Blackjack II, MOTO Q 9h Global, Pantech Duo and Tilt
  • Sprint’s “new Palm Treo” (which I assume to be the 800w), Mogul, Mogul, Touch, MOTO Q 9c and ACE
  • T-Mobile’s MDA Ameo 16 GB and MDA Compact IV
  • Verizon Wireless: None mentioned. Can you hear me now?

More importantly in the press release is news on the next version of Internet Explorer Mobile, due out by year end:

“The new version of Internet Explorer Mobile adds the ability to easily view full-screen Web pages and multimedia on the Web with a smartphone. By taking advantage of Internet Explorer 6 technologies and supporting established and upcoming industry standards such as H.264, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight, the updated Internet Explorer Mobile gives people a rich mobile Internet experience.”

Silverlight was expected, but H.264 and Adobe Flash? Interesting… I’m surprised to see support for both Silverlight and Flash, but I think it’s a good move from a consumer point of view.

  1. I know that people hate IE6 but if PIE can render like IE6 then it will be a 1000% improvement on the current version. Let’s just hope it’s fast.

That Xperia X1 from Sony Ericsson is looking better and better.

I’m not a huge Apple fan but the browser on the iPhone/iPod Touch has really set the standard in terms of mobile browsing and now that I know what’s possible I won’t rest until I can get that sort of experience elsewhere. I’m sure MS have a way to go but I hope they get there soon.

  2. And this is EXACTLY why I am buying an Android phone when they come out…this upgrade prob’ won’t be available for my Cingular 8525.

Yeah yeah…I know it doesn’t HAVE to be upgraded…but who wants to be left in the dust with a device when it’s only for policitical/capitalistic reasons and not technical ones?

Generally vendors of linux-based products aren’t in to the whole “planned obsolescence” thang.

Good site btw guys! You update often and have unique articles.

  3. I was kind of annoyed that Verizon, in particular my XV6800, isn’t on the list, especially since it’s exactly the same device as the Mogul and PPC6800, but then I realized that there are already ROM kitchens available to put WM6.1 on my XV6800 (and its brethren), and with the official release they’ll just get better. So, hooray!

For those phones that aren’t listed above, you can always go on XDA-Developers or PPCGeeks for custom ROM action. We’ve been doing 6.1 there for a couple months now.

  6. Mike, don’t know. Celio will probably have to update their driver like everybody else.
