SF’s Jolly Green Mayor Wants Wave, Solar, Plug-In Power

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom today rattled off an impressive number of initiatives the city is undertaking to become a world leader in sustainability, including plans to have electricity generated by the waves off its coast. Newsom also talked excitedly about his new solar rebate program, which kicks off April 1; his admiration of Project Better Place’s electric vehicle project and converting San Francisco’s cars to plug-in hybrids, and his forthcoming zippy Tesla Roadster (he’s #51 on the list). Earth2Tech has it all on video.

Alot of people think plug-in hybrids are the solution to global warming… However if you look deeper into the problem, they only increase fuel efficiency slightly. Moreover, many people are hesitant to transition to electric hybrids because of a) the price, and b) the lack of infrastructure needed to support a community using electric hybrids. Although San Fran could take advantage of wave power… That would at least provide an extra source of energy instead of using coal fired power plants.

Meanwhile he can’t even stop the homeless from pissing in the streets and harassing pedestrians. But I guess “Mayor reduces public urination” just doesn’t make for as glamorous a headline as energy socialism claptrap.

@ Frank Rizzo:

For better of worse, as I a New Yorker I’ve got to represent and say that Mayor Giuliani did make great headlines by cracking down on public urination back in the day (if only THAT had been his Presidential platform!). Although some weren’t such a fan of his “solution” to simply displace the problem by deporting the homeless to the cold and ill-equipped upstate regions.

In the mean time, I think Mayor Newsom is pursuing a lot of these clean energy opportunities with an appropriately open, but not naive, mind.
