Just look at what happens to specialist companies like Sirf technologies (GPS), or PortalPlayer (audio SoCs). If you can't integrate GPS/Bluetooth into an application processor or a baseband, you can't survive. A bigger player will integrate the specialist functionality, and unless you get diversified, you are toast.</p> A specialist has no role in today’s highly integrated chip design world.
