A specialist has no role in today's highly integrated chip design world. Just look at what happens to specialist companies like Sirf technologies (GPS), or PortalPlayer (audio SoCs). If you can't integrate GPS/Bluetooth into an application processor or a baseband, you can't survive. A bigger player will integrate the specialist functionality, and unless you get diversified, you are toast.
