Social network Pownce (which we’ve covered before) has announced a substantial improvement to their API. The biggest improvement to the new API is the ability to post to Pownce via the API (as well as fetching private and friends-only notes). With these changes, we should expect to see an increase in the number of tools available for managing your Pownce account, plus better support for Pownce from the various lifestreaming services.
Coupled with the recent database issues and continued downtime problems that Twitter has been having, this increases the chance that Pownce will experience strong growth by improving their third-party support. Could Pownce capitalize on this to emerge as this year’s SXSW darling? And if they do, can they handle the traffic any better than Twitter does?
As far as I can see Twitter still has the edge as you can use a ‘normal’ mobile phone. No need for internet access, or a data plan on your mobi’ You just need to be able to send and receive SMS.

Unless someone makes it work with phone/SMS, no. That’s why it took off at SXSW last year; everyone was using their phones to send text message twitters. Not everyone has an iPhone or a Blackberry to use the mobile interface – the regular old text messaging system was what made Twitter work. Everyone could join in the fun.
I want to update Pownce without going to the Pownce website. I’m looking for a Twitterfeed.com for Pownce.
