Also, I believe Skype has already come/is coming to the PSP Handheld Gaming platform. Honestly though, why would I use Skype (which can be garbled and horrible sounding a lot) when I could just IM someone from my mobile device?

While this article is informative about the state of Skype base mobile phone solutions, this article is highly misleading about why Skype isn't on handsets. The reason Skype isn't on handsets is because it's proprietary and it's p2p which is really inefficient for end user devices!

All Nokia s60 devices support SIP based calling and work great with Gizmo5. They have Gizmo software in the "download" folder on the device. Just click on it, install it and you're ready to call over any wifi connection. Or you can get Gizmo software from http://nokia.com/betalabs

Skype's closed systems make it a huge risk for handset manufacturers to support it because they would be 100% dependent on Skype to allow it to work. The benefit of an open standard like SIP is that companies like Nokia can support it knowing they can avoid getting vendor lock in. While the Gizmo software they provide relies on the Gizmo network you can call any SIP device in the world (wifi tablet, PC, ATA, etc).

Skype has done a lot of things right, but their technology has closed strategy has inherent limitations and interoperability and support on low end devices is where it falls short.

You can Skype on your Treo too... Install iSkoot for Palm OS - it works very well, even with EV-DO since it uses regular voice calls in conjunction with your data plan. Does eat into your minutes though.

I use http://www.mobivox.com/ which lets me make calls to all my skype contacts. Its great, calls within Canada or to the UK only cost $0.025 per minute. Given Canada's mobile plans (robbery) MobiVox is a god send.

One think I rarely hear talked about is what devices support true wideband call quality, one of the main reasons I use Skype. On my laptop with a Plantronics DSP400 headset, it is like being inside someone's head - fantastic (depending on the caller!) I used Skype on Windows Mobile a few times when it came out. Hopefully, the newer processors and Skype's SVOPC codec will allow mobile devices to handle the full high-quality voice Skype is capable of.
