let's see what all can go wrong.

the widget maker delivers active content with a bug (or worse) and someone uses a widget as a vector to deliver malware. fail.

a zillion people install a widget but then get bored. fail.

widgets are so easy to install that there is no lock-in and no barriers to entry, someone else does it better or just different and you change from boredom. fail.

CPM advertising on another platform generates more page views (Yahoo) or better targeting or analtyics (Google) and you are stuck in a little unprofitable niche of the world (fail).

Widgets are like dynamic placeholders. You put in the widget code and you give the widget maker access to place whatever content they want.

Applied correctly, it will/has already become internet advertising for dummies. Sorta like dropping in Adsense code into your site. Put in the single code and let Google do the rest.

This allows content providers to do what they do best.
Focus on Content.

The widget channel is legit, but it's just a delivery tactic at this point. Valuable, relevant content is the critical factor. It seems a natural fit for the entertainment industry. If the widget can deliver content that's worth watching right to my desktop, I'm willing to subject myself to advertising. Plain and simple. But the content better be good, frequent and fresh, or the widget will end up in the trash.

The ad model will work itself out, just as it did for display advertising. It's experimental at this point, but advertisers and media execs will typically reserve some spend for emerging channels. What matters more is their ability to reach an ever elusive target.

It's a BS category that will get wiped out if/when we go into recession. Why? Because the revenue models are purely experimental as are the advertiser benefits --- as spending gets cut so will the dollars flowing to widgets.

Blip'd has already come out with a platform that monetizes and measures widgets based on many of the ideas presented in this article. Go to the site and see that any widget, video or ad can be measured and monetized in real time - now.

In addition to being a vehicle for content delivery, widgets also make an excellent delivery mechanism for software services. I don't think however most software makers will want to develop, maintain, and integrate their own proprietary widget systems. So the providers of enterprise widget platforms (such as NewsGator) may be positioned for early success in the widget platform market.
