Picking a name for your startup is tough, especially when you have to consider real estate on the Web. Sometimes you have to get creative. We’ve written about this several times at Found|READ.

But beware. Today we ran across a post off a site called ToRoller.com (via Digg), about domain names gone wrong: 10 Easily Mispronounced Domain Names, retirates why you must be creative but careful! Some samples:

Speedofart.com (no explanation required!)

Butthatsnotall.co.nz
“Butt-hat” + “Snot-all” ?! OMG, that domain name sucks!

Nagiosexchange.com “Nagios is an open source host, service and network monitoring program, but it seems that they also ‘change the sexuality’ behind the scenes!”

  • For a while someone put up a site that looked like a real ecommerce site for buying high-end writing instruments at “Pen Island.com” (no space). Now someone’s squatting on it, so I guess the joke got old.

  • I dont think these names where mistakes.
    They are so obvious.
They must have been deliberately chosen.

  • Well, we chose with my partner “NoMajors” for an online toolbox for indies artists.. we found the name very cool but here, in France, people are shy. Each time we have an appointment they are affraid of being hit by majors… In the end we don’t have the support to develop this business !
