The WP dev community and the Microformats communities share members, have the same “culture” if you will. And many of the developers and architects know each other personally, so they are more likely to work with friends. If there were another platform that would win due to meritocracy, the developers would already know each other, and that platform might have been chosen. For some reason, the Microformats community prefers XFN over FOAF, and they probably have a good reason. XFN is already built-in to WordPress.
