I agree 100% with the above statement. Search Free Apps.com has over 800 distinct free services and almost none of them are open-source solutions. My concern with open-source is slightly different than discussed above: I want all of my applications to be really easy to use. In fact, a central criteria for including a service in Search Free Apps is that users can be up and running in under 10 minutes. In general, I find that open source solutions don't meet this criteria. They require too much technical expertise.

Be careful doing this. A lot of web developers are now pushing open source CMS', shopping carts, CRMs, etc as cheaper alternatives to tailored solutions. Often the developer/vendor doesn't have the expertise to deliver a custom solution so they just mash together open source solutions to deliver a rudimentary and cumbersome solution. The problem arises when, 6 months after the client's migrated to the new open source app which has been heavily 'cludged', a security flaw is identified. Its free / open source code - so every hacker in the world can access your source code to identify injection points, etc and because it's open source... vulnerabilities are also published with patches when identified.... But because the solution is a cludge of various free products patching is often difficult and neglected. I've seen several house-hold name brand companies have their websites reduced to bill-boards for Al Quada overnight due to this issue in recent times. All because someone in the IT department wanted to save a few bucks.

I run linux, apache, mysql, php, etc - so I'm obviously an advocate for free solutions when they have a proven track record. And there are some excellent packages around - However I'd have to say taking this road doesn't come without potential pit-falls – do your homework.

On the other hand, the time you spend researching and comparing alternatives is valuable, and there is a risk in trying something different. In this example, planning and scheduling a meeting (your time plus the time of everyone else) and having it go badly.

You have to factor those costs against the cost savings and see if you come out ahead or behind. I'd say it could go either way.

we switched a while back from one of the higher priced solutions to the much more attractively priced Yugma. it's a no brainer - especially for us who have budgets! we are so happy with yugma and are always happy when they release new things for us to use. we've been using their yugma-skype version for a few months now and have just started to use the browserbased viewer they just put out. they're doing good things! we're very satisfied customers!!
