The European Commission is increasing its funding for video-on-demand and digital cinema distribution projects to meet higher-than-expected demand, Variety reports. The commission’s Media programme recently approved 4.9 million euros (£3.4 million, $7.15 million) in grants to 12 applicant projects after having originally budgeted only $5.8 million (3.9 million euros, £2.7 million). The programme is now considering increasing the 2008 budget to $8.6 million (5.8 million euros, £4 million), and may go even higher.

Eleven of the 12 projects funded are VOD, and only one is digital cinema. Some of the successful bidders include France
