I'm a big fan of Tolkien, but It's hard to find a good LOTR game. I don't like any of them, and hope that this one will be better.

Well, honestly, it's probably not a surprise that a pro Machinima creator would be in favour of creation tools in the game. I am, just for the record - I've been following the LotR music scene for a while, and it's the coolest thing since [Sliced Bread] .

What gets me is why companies don't realise how popular this stuff is! I mean - there are theatre troupes - plural, like quite a few of them - in World of freakin' Warcraft, FFS! How incredibly hard is it to do theatre in that medium? And yet, they're flourishing - which implies they've got an audience, too.

We've gotta be seeing more of this stuff in future.

(Oh, and the uploaded notation thing? Very, very neat.)

The music system in Lotro has a long history at Turbine, as many ex-Asheron's Call players talk about the music system in AC2 as one of the best little bonus features of any MMO released in that era.

Glad you're talking about how even hardcore MMOs are truly social experiences. Fishing is another popular "play" activity inside of MMOs that goes back for quite some time.

And, just to toot my own horn for just a couple seconds, i wrote a very similar (although certainly less well written) article back in January on Lord of the Rings:

The first MMO to go Web 2.0

I've been playing a Mac/PC MMO called Clan Lord ( http://www.deltatao.com/clanlord ) since late 1998 that has an in game music system/Bard class that allows multiple players to play together in real-time etc. They have also, since day one, realized the power of cross media communications basically taking over the comp.sys.mac.games.adventure newsgroup for years and using ICQ, player "scrolls" (webpages), wikis etc. for additional communication. The graphics are "quaint" and old school, but considering there is a core population that have been playing for almost 10 YEARS it's pretty impressive. There are no level "caps" and it's a persistent world constantly being added to and there are NO snerts. It's definitely for a more mature, refined gamer, but the community is what keeps people coming back for more year after year. Anyway... just showing that what's breaking "news" to some can be really, really old "been there, done that" to others. LOTR online looks cool!

I joined LoTRO for the chance to game in Middle Earth, but the music has been an unexpected bonus. The first month or so, I had to turn player music off because nobody had quite gotten the hang of the thing yet and it wasn't pretty, but now that people are more proficient it's been a nice plus.

And the server population is refreshingly light on jerks. They seem to prefer WoW.

In-game music beats in-game adverts every time, as Hellgate: London found out recently with their demo release.

I suppose if the copyright holders are smart, they'll want a way to let people buy the music they're listening to while they're playing the game.

Probably less of a challenge than actually playing the game...
