suntech.jpgChinese solar cell maker Suntech Power Holdings (STP) officially opened its U.S. headquarters in San Francisco this week — we like that because the office is not too far from Earth2Tech, GigaOM headquarters. SF Mayor Gavin Newsom, never one to shy away from green-themed media attention, held a press conference with Suntech CEO Dr. Zhengrong Shi to celebrate the opening.

Zhengrong Shi said the five-year-old solar company is opening the office in SF because the U.S. will become the largest solar market globally over the next few years, and California has long history of solar policies. Suntech also helped build a 500kW solar system at the SF Airport and a solar system at the SF-based California Academy of Science.

This is also good news for you if you work in the growing Bay Area solar industry, or at one of the next-generation Silicon Valley solar startups. We know we have questions — let’s all go check these guys out! Field trip sometime soon to: 188 The Embarcadero, Suite 800, San Francisco.
