What a great read, I wholeheartedly agree that the time when we should be working and when we should be playing has blurred. But the benefits of not having to commute and being there when your kids need you makes it acceptable for me.

"There was a time when all of your business data was on the computer, or the network, that you used for business: You logged into your corporate intranet to view files, and used your Exchange server to check email or colleague availability. Then you drove home, where you got onto the family PC to check personal email, play games, balance your checkbook, etc."

This sounds like me! lol I have been working at home fulltime for some now. And still I am enjoying it and the flexibility it gives. Great post!

On the subject of the blurred line between home and work I want to draw your attention to a discussion on the following blog :
http://b-r-ent.com/news/un-intranet-comme-chez-soi-pour-se-sentir-chez-soi-au-travail
As its in French I'll give you a quick resume : Xavier takes us through his working day where he mixes every new technology that is now in the home and often work place...and decribes a situation where
- he speed dates at work through a social network (la rencontre) set up in the office
- the marketing department wants him for a parachute jump that he will then relay on 'extremelife'
- a colleague is posted to a new job in Estonia because of his blog that upper management read and thanks to which they bought a new company
- there are no longer meetings where people spend time reading or looking at ppt because they all work on collaborative work places and only meet to actually talk through work..10mins max
- people at work reprensent themselves with avatars (a guy at work has a black eye from rugby so uses his avatar for the morning meeting - another colleague puts up a picture of her book shelves because her office is such a mess)
- the company has set up various inhouse online intranet tools like a nanny service (meaning nobody has the excuse of being late for work) or intranet sales sites where he sells his car)
- and at lunch he goes off and plays virtual golf on a wii with a colleague...
OK this post is a little long and I am wondering whether you might just be fluent in French...if you are please take a look at the blog where there is some interesting discussion on Web 2.0 in the work place.
Cheers

Caroline

hey, great point - and certainly a question the IRS will be asking!!! perhaps, if you have time, you might interview some accountants here or on webworker daily to explore this particularly thorny issue...for example: a dedicated home office space, but the work machine has sw that can receive a cable signal and so is used to record tv shows for personal use...but also for business use...shows are burned or transmitted (apple tv for example) to another room for viewing - including business content - so what's the deduction classification? part of the cable bill? the devices? is it all for nothing?

what about subscription web services that are also used to manage personal affairs (e.g. single inbox, online storage/backup, etc)?
