Here's a game with an interesting twist on Scrabulous. Everyone plays on the same board, which is persistent. So it will just keep growing and growing. It's a MMOWG ( Massively Multiplayer Online Word Game ) ;)

Interesting play model, since you don't have to start a game with anyone, but are still competing/sharing with all other players.

Yes, I'm shamelessly promoting my own game, but I think it's relevant to the article. Besides, it's a widely accepted independent game developers guerrilla marketing tactic :)

I have always been surprised about how companies can market games similar to classics and get away with it. I love Scrabulous and its Scrabble concept - I'm just surprised that Hasbro hasn't jumped all over it. Same with the Monopoly knock-offs like "Dog-Opoly", which uses the Monopoly concept but changes the board layout a bit. Must be pretty complex legal considerations when developing games based on classics.

To be honest, i think facebook games are a great idea. You can play with your friends, in a non violent way and have fun for free. And for facebook, well they keep us on their network, so i guess everyone is happy.
