I finally found a guide to online backup!
It’s got lots of useful info on the most popular services!
It’s a great way to protect and share computer files.
I found it on wikipedia but I put it online at:

Hi, i try both Mozy, and i found that are quite slow during the back up process. Furthermore, their back up is not in real time but you have to schedule timings. Recently i try also a new start up from Europe, Memopal (www.memopal.com) faster and with real time back up. Much better i think.

I'm the CEO of Carbonite, Mozy's arch competitor. Frankly, I think EMC made a very smart move. Even if you have big iron backup products like Veritas, you're probably not doing a good job of backing up laptops and desktops. I know that road warriors are frequently shocked (when they leave they computers in a taxi somewhere) to find out that the only thing on their laptops that was being backed up regularly is email. People lose a lot more data to hard drive crashes, theft, and other disasters today than they do to viruses. Someday hundreds of millions of PCs will be running online backup applications like Mozy and Carbonite. This is going to be a very large market and $76M could well look like peanuts to get a good product at the perfect time in an exploding market.

Hey, speaking of CrashPlan -- I use it and it has saved my #@^ a few times with amazingly fast restore. Mozy might be the best of breed gen 2 product, HOWEVER, all online backup has limits and it is the past. Too bad for EMC. Gen 3 is the future - I backup to mulitple destinations (i.e. laptop to desktop, work to home) so I know exactly where my data is and how to get it. I'm not comfortable with all my eggs in one basket. Also not comfortable with weeks to restore. Last week I restored a document in less than 30 seconds! Also a backup 'product' versus a backup 'service' is much cheaper, considering how much data I store.

Kind of surprising EMC likes Mozy as it rewrites much of the underlying storage system, and I would love to see a more cross platform solution like CrashPlan which delivers both a subscription and an own-it solution for users and businesses. Seems like this market is set to grow in any case.

$76M for this unreliable service is a little steep. I think EMC doesn't realize that Amazon S3 based services are Mozy-killers. They should have developed one or bought one of the companies building it (www.beinsync.com, www.jungledrive.com and others).

How can subscription-based internet backup solutions compete with all-you-can-eat "back up to a friend" solutions like Fubario (http://fubario.com) and CrashPlan (http://crashplan.com) ?

I guess maybe SMBs will care about SLAs a bit more, and I haven't looked to see if Mozy has an SLA...

I use both Amazon S3 and Mozy--They both have their place. At home, I pay $50/year for Mozy and store approximately 150 gigabytes of data, while I work I use JungleDisk and Amazon S3 to back up our servers. The sweet spot for Mozy is their consumer product(MozyHome) which offers unlimited storage--my 150 gigabytes would cost me around $300/year on Amazon S3. However, for corporate usage (MozyPro), that same 150 gigabytes would cost almost $1,000 per year. So, for personal usage, MozyHome is hard to beat, but for corporate usage, Amazon S3 makes the most economic sense.

Amazon S3 greatly undermines Mozy's revenue model, which had been established before Amazon has made storage easy and commoditized. Companies such as DigiSense, BeInSync and others recognize that and offer superior and possible cheaper online storage to Mozy's less-reliable datacenter.

I don't think EMC understands the economics of online backup. They just bought a company that pays user to store that with them. That's right. Mozy pays users to store data with them. That is fine in the startup world when you are flush with venture capital, but how long will EMC continue to pay people to use it's consumer service?

I am a Mozy user since their beginnings. I also have the corporate version for our server installed.. It is an amazing and valuable service. i have tried all other guys out there and Mozy is hands-down the best and easy to use service.

So, for me, as an individual and as a company, the value of the service is gold... i guess that he price paid for Mozy makes sense, and more in an era were big multimedia files are invading our harddrives...
