Now Email your Facebook friends

As if revolutionizing the e-mail experience wasn’t enough, the Xobni boys are cooking up Facebook apps. They have cooked up a Facebook app, Email Me Instead, that allows you to get email from your Facebook friends. [Now this isn’t their main product, but still we are not going to complain about it.
No it is not messages in your Facebook InBox, but instead send an old fashioned email. The app adds a small little button to your profile, and allows your friends to send you emails. Apparently there are a lot of people who want this functionality. And here I was thinking Facebook is the new email. Thank god, I didn’t fall for the shiny-shiny this time around.

I just made this last weekend because I was getting a little annoyed with my email inbox becoming a feedreader for facebook messages. It was a fun little project and it was cool to learn about the facebook platform. Now I just hope everyone adds it so i can Email Them Instead.

I love the idea but I’ve had it on my FB profile for a week and no one has used it. I much prefer email to FB messages.

Hi Robin,

I wonder what else we can do to help convert people to email me instead. I was thinking about making some flashier buttons. Any other ideas?

Hi Om,

I’ve added this app - no real change in my contacts’ usage habits - they still email me through facebook all the time. I manage to get Jeff Pulver email me back on the good old POP3/SMTP world, and only cause i started the conversation on the regular email.

I really doubt this will get any traction because Facebook won’t allow deep enough integration. At the end of the day, Facebook wants CPMs and they only get that by forcing you to visit their site.
