Axiotron_modbookBack in May, we had heard that the ModBook would be shipping soon. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll all be waiting a bit longer for this modified Mac OS X Tablet. How long? Word on the web is that you’re looking at a fourth quarter delivery this year, but the good news is that pre-ordering is still possible. Or is that pre-pre-ordering? It’s a shame that not even a production sample is available at the moment; or perhaps it is and Microsoft Tablet MVPs aren’t allowed to play? The device was demonstrated at MacWorld, so at least one of ‘em exists. ;)

The official reason for the delay is a parts shortage, but I’ll be darned if I can figure out what part would be hard to get. More to follow for sure…I’m pinging a PR contact for Other World Computing to see if there’s any additional info.

  1. Kevin- good luck on getting in touch with the PR folks. These things look like they’re turning into vaporware. I met the ModBook inventor at MacWorld, who said they’d be shipping by Spring of this year. That came and went. I ran into a WACOM rep who was using one at WWDC last month and there still seem to be some quirks.
I also put a call into the PR group last month, but haven’t heard back…

  2. This has been really frustrating. I ordered mine back in February as soon as ordering online became available. I have seen the expected delivery date go from April to May to July and now to September. I am almost at the point of canceling my order, but there is really no where else to go if you want to have a Mac based tablet. I have also thought about trying to install Mac OSX on my old TC1100 to make a killer MacTablet, but have not been able to get it to work right. And there was that other guy who made his own Tablet Mac some time ago…

  3. Who wants a modbook when the Mac Book Pro is like a hot potatoe? I know you have a Macbook and imagine you have to write your hands on the hot plate, yike!

  6. It could be that they might want to wait and see if the rumored Apple subnotebook is for real and whether it has tablet capabilities or not. Although it is not the same type of device, it’s still close enough to fear it.
