Hello Jérôme ! Long time no see :) Great seeing you evangelizing the GigaOM eyeballs to what is happening in Europe and in France in particular. I personally grew my teeth in launching from scratch in France the Google, Looksmart and AOL operations, and I learned so much from these giants that today my team and I are happy to see Webwag mentioned oftenly in the ReadWriteWeb, LifeHackert and Mashable alikes.

And now some guys in France would like to cover the country with fiber optics for everybody (P2P FTTH not Gpon). Pau (nice town) has now 40.000 homes passed with fiber... Hauts de Seine county (west of Paris) starts also fiber at the end of this year (around 250.000 households). Free (a private ISP) starts 4 millions fiber homes passed next september... And Orange (France Telecom) starts also to stay on the market (but in Gpon)...
My perspective : in 2.010 we would have 75% of households connected on the net (56% to day) in this country... And 2 - 3 millions with fiber... French start-ups would create new kind of broadband applications I think...
I wrote an "open letter" to President Sarkozy to ask him a to launch a "e- new deal" for France : fiber for everybody at the same price as ADSL (... If you read french , it's here : http://billaut.typepad.com/jm/2007/06/lettre-ouverte-.html
If you read french...
France would be ready for action (I hope).

Excellent overview of the French market. This article pinpoints the power of the wide broadband coverage that helps France to catch up for its traditional lack of speed to adopt new technologies. Thanks for bringing this structured and analytical article on the scene and please come back with more in the future!

To be considered successful you need to export your product. France and all of Europe has failed in that (in the area of Web 2.0). The real problem is a lack of access to capital and the cultural non-acceptance of entrepreneurship in Europe. The USA beats us Europeans hands down every time. Skype/Jajah/Netvibes are exceptions. So, lets stop clapping ourselves on the back and let's get down to work!

Interesting article, I'd like to add another factor helping French Internet (and globally speaking high-tech) entrepreneurs : the active support of public administrations and agencies.

From the governement, the JEIs (French acronym of "Jeunes Entreprises Innovantes" = Young Innovative Companies) have tax exemptions, very low charges on salaries etc.

From OSEO, the public agency for Innovation, entrepreneurs can quite easily get financial support to complete the financing of the early stage of a start-up.

An exemple : having raised 320 kEuros from business angels, UbicMedia, the company I'm working for, already got around 150 kEuros from public services, and within 3 month after the funding.

It is really helpful!
