One clarification about yet one more unfounded claim about the "evil" carriers: carriers only charge above $0.99 per song for songs that one can purchase and download over the air. Does anybody know if one can do this from the iphone? If so, it's going to be extremely painful when compared to Verizon Wireless' 1xEvDO. To purchase songs from one's computer for later transfering to the phone at least Verizon Wireless charges the same amount as iTunes.

those saying that the iPhone won't change a thing and won't sell well remind me of those who said the exact same thing when the first iPod came out...

"At any rate, if the iPhone performs as advertised, the music listening experience will be far better than any existing option, which will force existing handset makers to answer with comparable devices or risk losing significant market share to Apple."

Sorry, but this statement is just clueless. Have you tried any of the music services from Nokia Nseries or Sony Ericsson devices?

In the UK, we've had equivalent or better services for several years. Nokia's acquisition of Loudeye/OD2 was an intelligent move in this direction.

I'm afraid your post not only doesn't support the provocative headline, but doesn't offer any new information or insights. What are your qualifications to comment on the iPhone vs. other mobile devices?

I think the iPhone has already changed the mobile music business and business in general simply because it got people talking again about a product. It got people excited about a mobile phone, which is rare. I am not going to buy this first generation iPhone, but I will be buying version 3.0 or 5.0 down the line that I am sure will be revolutionary, and I can't wait to see what competitors do to improve upon the iPhone's capabilities. I also can't wait to see how Microsoft's Manila technology, which is similar to the iPhone's touch screen technology, will change society. I guess the iPhone and the technology behind it is a sign that innovation is not slowing down, and that's always a good thing.

Shan,

You're right; blame Om for the headline! Regardless, it will change mobile music in raising the bar -- will OTA downloads really matter from stores powered by the likes of Groove Mobile? I've tried the one at Sprint and it leaves a lot to be desired. Then there is ringtones. Instead of buying a ringtone, what if there were an app that could let you easily set a ringtone from your existing music collection? The labels and publishers would hate it but it sure could be disruptive...

I don't think this phone will be any great evolution at all. It's an incremental step towards a device convergence, but I don't think Apple is breaking any new ground on the mobile music business (since you really can't buy songs on the fly). It will just another rev 1 Apple product with issues. I can't wait for the issues.

Apple's iphone is just the start. If this technology is going to be good as they say it is going to be it will most likely continue to expand in the way of television and movies. Not just downloading and watching (ipods), but streaming like Verizon's sort of V-cast shows.

We are going with the evolution of music to movies like radio to television in the past.

"At any rate, if the iPhone performs as advertised, the music listening experience will be far better than any existing option"

What?! A closed platform with DRM laden music is better than my "existing option" where I can play mp3's from anywhere simply by dragging them onto my device (no itunes necessary) or putting them on an SD card that goes into my phone. What about obscure (or self-recorded) music that you can't get through itunes.. how does it get onto the iphone?

"So even if the iPhone is a bomb, it will have raised the bar for the entire industry and we will mark June 29th as the day mobile music took a giant leap forward."

Hahahahaha.. no.

I hadn't thought about how the iPhone might affect the music industry, but you have several excellent points there. I think the iPhone will most definitely seal the deal for iTunes and make it overtake Walmart & Amazon as the leading seller of music.

I think the iPhone will be revolutionary for the mobile phone industry much in the same way as the Wii was for the game console business. I wrote about this in this article if anyone is interested:
