The Guardian has a good analysis on the ringtone market, and whether it will continue to grow or start fading away. On the one hand, the ability to sideload music and set MP3s as ringtones is clearly going to destroy the ringtone industry… On the other hand, “nobody within the mobile business anticipated the demand for either ringtones or text messages in the first place, indicating the market’s unpredictability, says Music Ally’s Steve Mayall”. He’s got a good point, and later claims that people will continue to buy ringtones because it’s convenient. I don’t think the ringtone business is going to disappear any time soon, but it’s unlikely to grow much either — and the industry may have to consider not charging three times as much for a ringtone as for an MP3 of the entire song.
