I met up with Mike Whalen at Starbucks and he got some good time in on both the ThinkPad x61 and the Fujitsu P1610.  It was interesting seeing someone using the two different digitizers side by side for the first time.  One thing we both agreed on, the x61 is fast.  Mike played with OneNote on the x61 quite a bit, he uses it on a non-tablet now and got to see first-hand the strength of being able to search ink notes.  I had a good time, it was good seeing Mike again (he is a nice guy) and while I don’t know if Mike will be getting his own x61 any time soon the last I saw him using it he was on the Lenovo site configuring one.  Sorry Mrs. Mike.  :)

  1. I wobbled back and forth, back and forth, but I did indeed buy one. Sigh.

    I can’t help myself sometimes.

The only thing I neglected to do was add the $10.00 Bluetooth option. Gulp. That means I’ll be on the horn to Lenovo sales early on Monday. I sure hope I can add it. :-(

  2. When you’re working at Starbucks are you using the security in TMo’s Connection Manager? If you go without or login via the web page, a good deal of what you do can be sniffed. Does your Outlook client send your credentials in the clear…? This is probably a topic worth blogging – most of these networks are wide open for snooping.

Mark — I couldn’t help myself either. I did the same thing, and without even having a personal demo from JK! I’d be interested to hear about the rest of your specs. Did you go for the turbo memory? Which screen? I pretty much ordered the Cadillac, well, maybe the low-end, 2 gig Cadillac. ;) Oh, and my order date was 6/7, with an estimated ship date of 7/12. It’s kind of frustrating to wait 5ish weeks for the fastest tablet on earth…

Oops! Mark = Mike. Sorry about that. [Freudian slip, I guess.. My dad's name is Mark and it is, after all, his day today.]

  5. Dave, that’s a good point. I use the advanced security of the fingerprint reader software to encrypt the login credentials for Outlook and any sensitive web sites.

Yes. My ship date is 7/19/2009. Well, I’m kidding about the year. It’s going to be awhile. Too bad, too, as I’m going to Boston in a couple of weeks. Oh well. It will be fun when it comes.

    Hey everyone,

I wanted to post the following about how I purchased my X61.

In doing some research last night, I found some pretty amazing coupons for this. The difference in price was so startling that I now have _two_ X61s on order. I will cancel one on Monday.

I’m still verifying this, but it seems to work this way:

    1. Go to fatwallet.com and create an account or login.

    2. Click the link for the 6% Cash Back Lenovo deal. This will take you to Lenovo’s site through FatWallet. (THIS EXPIRES TODAY!)

    3. In the search bar at the top of the Lenovo page, you type “Shareholder Purchase Program” and click Search.

    4. The first result is the Shareholder Purchase Program page. Click it, then type the code “536686” in the field and click the button.

    5. Configure and add the X61 to your cart.

    6. In the coupon field, enter “USXIBMSPPTRIPLE” (All Caps) and click the link to apply the coupon.

    7. Pay for the order.

Now, my first purchase was $2,084 w/o Bluetooth and a 60g HDD.

My new purchase is $1833 with a 120g HDD and Bluetooth. This is before I get an additional Cash Back rebate from FatWallet in a number of weeks.

(This is the part I’m uncertain about. The FatWallet website indicates that there’s usually a code on a popup that appears when you go to the vendor’s page from their website. I saw the popup, but it doesn’t contain a code, only a reference number. It’s probably okay, but I’m checking with the more knowledgeable folks.)

    Here are the details.

Holy cow! Mike, that’s incredible! My order was about 2200 and I got it that low by using an educational discount for faculty that took off about $750 (better than the current, standard promotion). It made a difference but it didn’t bring me to your price range. VERY nice work, man. That’s amazing. Thanks for sharing the details of how you did it
and your specs too. You are now officially my Gadget Discount Sensei. :)

No way. No sensei here. Sensei would have made honorable and cheaper order first.
