Quite a move by MySpace. It seems that News Corp is pretty serious about getting a bigger online presence, and sure, it does seem like the video ban was a negotiating tactic. However, if IAC was the other company in the running, it sure seems like MySpace was a far better fit for Photobucket, given they have some synergy already ;)

If they did then that's one way of ending the dispute between them.

This is surprising.
Smart tactics by myspace. They realised they were getting too much negative publicity by blocking out photobucket. So they appeared to give in and then just bought it out!

I wanted photobucket to be acquired by some large player. And although I am not a big fan of myspace, I think this merger would work out well.

If correct, this is another nice move by Mr. Murdoch and the News Corp/FIM teams...locking up the arguably top (depending on one's definition of "top") photo site on the web.

In addition to being a nice additional insurance policy for their market-leading MySpace property (i.e. users/members, visit counts, and time/visit); it also opens up additional monetization opportunities which Photobucket would have found difficult if not impossible for themselves to realize.

Unlike some of the recent acquisitions by others, this is a clearcut 1 + 1 = 3 synergistic move.

At the Red Herring conference last Thursday Alex Welch said jokingly that Photobucket is worth $5 Bn, and that they were continuing to build the business to reach its potential. Either there is no deal, or Alex is a good poker player ;)
