I've had several units. Mixed results (burning software conflicts, ISP etc) What NO ONE here has stated with the 'quality of sound' issue is the the MJ, HAS TO HAVE a 'single-pair' phone line and not the normal 2-pair one normal finds on the connection cords (from phone to MJ intself). The same holds true to the phone itself.

One would have to look at female connection inside phone and the MJ to see the TWO shiny metal pieces of imbedded wire, running in tandem with the 6 groves of the telephonic female fitting on the phone.

Hope this is understood and that it helps someone. I found out the hard way, so pass it along.

Magic Jack has been ordered to have 911 service
in Canada by October 15 by the CRTC.

Magic Jack is saying that they can't have it installed
until November 15 2010.

Magic Jack has also known that they need to have
911 service in Canada for a very long time but has
thumbed their nose at the system and has not installed
it. Now it looks like Magic Jack is being ordered to have
911 service installed.

If Magic Jack fails to have 911 service installed
in Canada by October 15 2010 the CRTC is saying
that they will identify the Local Exchange Carriers
(LECs) and / or local service providers that are
providing network resources and Canadian phone numbers
with the intention of disconnecting service to Magic Jack
if they don't get it installed by October 15 2010.

The CRTC made a ruling April 4 2005 that all
VOIP providers must provide 911 service, more
than 5 years ago and still Magic Jack doesn't have
911 service on their service.

My MJ worked fine for me until about mid July. I have 3 ppl that I call on a reg basis in 2 close small towns in VA. In mid-July, suddenly I was unable to call them.. just got 3 quick busy signals. I can call anyone else in the same area code, just no one in those two small towns.. Live Chat was no help. Without being able to call those 3 ppl, MJ is useless to me.

My mom saw one of these advertised and she about drove me up the everloving wall to get one. The ads said they worked with any high speed internet connection. I kept telling her I purchase an allotted amount of bandwidth per month and this would take an awful lot of bandwidth. Besides, we were already using Skype for much cheaper...

(Our local phone company runs a monopoly and doesn't let the other phone companies come into the area...so it's theirs or else...so that's why it seemed like such an attractive solution. There's a sucker born every minute folks.)

Well anyway, long story short, there's a consumer reporter on some Tulsa news station who tests out these as seen on TV things every Thursday. They said this thing worked great...

Mom would not give up until she had one, since we'd used our cell phone all this time. (But there are days when it won't work everywhere and it's good to have a backup plan right?) OK, so they finally became available at Wal-Mart. I installed the thing. It was NOT easy to install at all, on either my brand new laptop, OR my desk top computer. Took over an hour on each one...and before someone says I was probably not doing something right, you're wrong...because I did exactly what it asked me to do to the letter. It took nearly an hour to get the thing to work. I plugged the phone into it when it was ready and I got my (NON LOCAL) number...it worked but there was an extremely severe delay. This happened on four computers, as well as trying out different kinds of phones, including the softphone that comes with it. The person could hear me but the delay was so bad, they would hang up thinking I'd stopped talking, or not respond to them...that makes having a normal conversation possible. And when it wasn't delaying it was cutting out. I got on their website, checked it out and then found out that what they don't tell you is that if you have satellite internet, like I do from Wild Blue, you will get delays like this. MJ claims that the delays are due to the fact that satellite based broadband is not fast enough to support the software in MJ. I beg to differ. I did a speed test on both my computer as well as my modem and it's almost instantaneous...and downloading the thing as well as trying to figure it out ate up about 25 gigs of bandwidth! So, that's $40 down the drain, not to mention the slow down I got from my internet provider for going over the bandwidth limit. Yeah...

Here's the thing. If you can get the thing to work, fine and dandy. But it is NOT for everyone and if you're really wanting to save money on calls, buy a pre paid phone card or get an economical cell phone calling plan...and don't talk too much. There's other ways to communicate that aren't as frustrating. I guess it might even work well for travel as well, provided you can find a computer abroad that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to pay for bandwidth.

Hi Everyone...

Let me clear some doubts here.. magicjack is a hardware which has phone jack as input...

You do not need a regular phone line. Just plug in a phone set.. there is no need to have a regular home phone line... when you connect a stand alone phone hardware to the majicjack you will be able to dial from that stand alone phone set(I am repeating there is no regular landline connected anywhere).. Dial anywhere in NORTH AMERICA..

Also.. if you do not have a phone set.. just plug in ur magicjack in USB of your desktop or laptop.. it will configure your dialer software and you will then be able to make calls.

You can also go to MENU to configure if you want to use your laptop mic and speakers or plug in a headphone with mic to enjoy some privacy.. :P

Hi Everyone…

Let me clear some doubts here.. magicjack is a hardware which has phone jack as input…

You do not need a regular phone line. Just plug in a phone set.. there is no need to have a regular home phone line… when you connect a stand alone phone hardware to the majicjack you will be able to dial from that stand alone phone set(I am repeating there is no regular landline connected anywhere)..

I really like MJ, but I am having a problem with dialing out on international calls to Brazil. It used to work fine after I buy minutes with a credit card. Now when I dial out it connects, but no one can hear me talking. The call just seems to mute and then drop. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks
