Greetings GigaOM/NewTeeVee,

I work with Babelgum’s recently-hired U.S. PR firm and wanted to send you a few tips before they become public.

  • Babelgum will launch its open/public beta on 4-18 but will begin taking requests this Friday. All who request beta access will receive their username/password by 4-18.

  • Spike Lee has given Babelgum exclusive distribution rights to his new documentary about poverty in Africa. It will premiere on Babelgum on 4-18 and run for 3 months.

  • Babelgum is positioning itself not necessarily as a Joost competitor but more of a Joost “compliment,” focusing first on acquiring more niche content not immediately available online or Netflix. Independent films, short films, documentaries, travel programming, international sports video, etc.

  • They have content deals signed with 20 independents and two majors (can’t tell you which majors yet) and will enter open beta with 3,500 hours of content.

  • You may already know this, but Babelgum will be free to users and all content will be licensed to them directly from the content-owners.

So, starting Friday anyone that visits Babelgum.com can sign up for open beta and starting Wednesday they can access the beta and check out the Spike Lee flick.
