I'm going to go out on a limb and agree with you, I think that 2007 is definately the year of the "contributory social networking site" for gamers :)

If I was taking bets on when this would happen I would say Feb 07.....

Thanks, Daniel. Runescape does run an ad feed on their front page, which is what I was referring to, but I'll update when I can. Would love to see a link to that subscriber figure, that's fascinating.

For the record, Runescape is not accurately described as free and ad-driven. Runescape was a pioneer of the 'free to play, pay extra for upgraded features' model now used by many games, including ours. The vast majority of their revenue comes from over 800,000 (iirc) subscribers paying $5 per month. That's out of an active userbase of many millions of free players.

Companies really don't need to go the route of advertising in MMORPGs for the simple fact that its sister business model, shitball grindfest with built-in RMT, already works just as well. The clincher there is that they both depend on the exact same sort of no-life, mouthbreathing stupidity.

Mark my words: this is the year of everyone figuring out just how fucked the free market concept gets when you have the internet as the bridge between worthless products and worthless people. This is when companies figure out that, like with Counter-Strike or Korean MMORPGs, you can make a shitload of money for no effort off of a community that, by its nature, causes the lowest common denominator to actually DECREASE over time.

A fool and his money are soon parted. So the new business model will be to cultivate more fools.
