Bain Capital, Silver Lake Partners and Huawei plan to buy out 3Com’s stake in company’s joint venture with Huawei called Huawei-3Com Co. reports Bloomberg. The three year old joint venture accounts for nearly 51% of 3Com sales.

Earthlink will build Alexandria, VA MuniFi Network

The Wireless Report says that Earthlink has won the contract to build a wifi network in Alexandria, Virginia. The 16 square mile wireless network will offer discounted access to low income residents, and the news announcement is likely to be made tomorrow. Earthlink is also building networks in Anaheim, Philadelphia and several other cities.

WiFi HotSpots Increasing Sharply in Russia

Russia will have close to 7000 hotspots by end of 2006, of which nearly 6,000 are owned and operated by Golden Telecom, according to a study by J’son & Partners. There will be 13,000 hotspots in Russia by 2010, the study predicts. via

Andrew Schmitt tells a hilarious story about his FiOS connection, which suffered at the teeth of an overeager squirrel. Andrew points out that Verizon engineers (two) spent nearly 12 hours trying to fix the problem when his service went down. After working overnight they found the problem.
