E. W. Scripps posted a better-than-expected third quarter profit thanks in part to strong performance from its interactive media businesses Shopzilla and uSwitch. Net income at the Cincinnati-based company fell 11 percent to $73.06 million, or 44 cents per share, compared with $82.2 million, or 50 cents in the same quarter last year. Sales jumped 13 percent to $583 million. The company was expected to earn 40 cents on revenue of $584.09 million, according to analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial.
— Profit at Scripps Interactive Media business was $9 million, up more than 22 percent from $7.31 million a year earlier. Revenue jumped 73 percent to $60.8 million, a growth rate that far surpassed the company’s broadcast television and newspaper units.
